Welcome to Edison School of the Arts!
Hello! My name is Amy Berns, and I am the Assistant Principal here at Edison School of the Arts. I would like to welcome you to our school where students create, perform and achieve. I have proudly served our students and families in Indianapolis Public Schools since 2006. We have an absolutely stunning building located in the heart of the city. As a huge Colts fan, I must say I enjoy looking out to Lucas Oil Stadium everyday! I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have 4 boys and one girl dog named Halle! As a family, we enjoy spending time outdoors, traveling, and being with our friends and family.
I have had an amazing career so far in education. After graduating high school I pursued my Bachelors in Social Work at Ball State University. My internships were completed in the school setting which helped me to later decide to go on and earn my Transition to Teaching Certificate at Indiana Wesleyan Universtiy. While teaching, I had a personal experience with my own child who suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was 4 years old. After having to navigate the field of special education as a classroom teacher and parent, I realized I wanted to gain more knowledge on how I could best serve and advocate for not only my own child, but all the children I interacted with on a daily basis. I had the desire to grow personally and professionally and went back to earn my master's in Education in Mild Interventions.
I continued my teaching, and along the way I continued to take leadership opportunities as often as I could. I enjoyed sharing my experiences and knowledge in the classroom with other teachers and leaders in the district. I began presenting at professional development sessions for teachers in the area of mathematics. I had the opportunity to be a featured instructional trainer with the Department of Education for a "Teachers Helping Teachers Video: Standards for Mathematical Practice in Action."
I have been honored to be the state recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and also a National Finalist for the Presidential Award. Before making the decision to pursue my master's in Education Administration, I was nominated by my colleagues for Teacher of the Year and went on to be in the Top 10 Teacher of the Year candidates for Indianapolis Public Schools. While working on my second master's degree, I went on to be a building instructional coach and then moved on to be one of the District Curriculum and Instructional Content Specialists. It was during that time that I had the great opportunity to work alongside and support Mr. Tuttle at his building.
Upon finishing my administration program, I knew that I wanted to continue my educational career working side-by-side with Mr. Tuttle. That is where the story begins. This will be an incredible year with so many amazing opportunities for our students. I welcome you to the Edison School of the Arts Family.
