2026 Operating Referendum

Investing in all students within the IPS boundary

The Indianapolis Public Education Corporation Board (also known as the IPEC) is seeking a four-year Operating Referendum in 2026 to support school-based needs for all schools serving students who
reside in the Indianapolis Public Schools boundary.

The IPEC Board approved the referendum
and rate on June 22, 2026.

Registering to Vote

In previous years, Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has been responsible for determining our own rates for operating and capital referendums needed by the district. However, in early 2026, the Indianapolis Public Education Corporation was given levying authority for all schools within the IPS boundary, with referendum funding going to both IPS and public charter schools that serve students living within the district’s boundary.

The IPEC approved a referendum rate of 0.372 cents per $100 of assessed property value, which is a lower rate than IPS recommended to the IPEC Board. Still, this referendum is critically important.

The 2026 Operating Referendum is a defining moment for our school district and for our city. For the first time, families, educators, businesses, neighborhood leaders, and schools across the city are united around a simple belief: When it comes to the children who live within the IPS boundary, we are united in ensuring they all receive an equitable education.

At Indianapolis Public Schools, we believe every student has the right to an excellent education, no matter what school they attend.

This operating referendum is about more than balancing numbers on a spreadsheet — it’s about shaping the future for the young people in our city. It’s about coming together to ensure that students continue to have access to strong academic programs, extracurricular opportunities, and the support they need to succeed from talented teachers and staff.Dr. Aleesia Johnson, Superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools
