Devonne (Nae) Baker's path to becoming an educator has come full circle. Although she grew up surrounded by teachers and school communities, she initially pursued other career paths before discovering that education was her true calling. After joining Brookside School 54 as a special education assistant and later serving as an Associate Teacher, Baker found her passion in helping students learn and grow. Today, she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in elementary education through the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program (RTAP) in partnership with Marian University, while preparing to represent Indianapolis Public Schools on an international stage at Oxford University—a testament to her dedication, growth, and commitment to the teaching profession.

Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, Arts for Learning Indiana will launch its innovative Artists Building Community Fellowship in Indianapolis Public Schools, embedding professional Teaching Artists in schools for three years to integrate the arts into daily learning experiences. The program will debut at Edison School of the Arts, Joseph J. Bingham School 84, and William Penn Middle School, with each school partnering with a Teaching Artist whose work aligns with its unique culture and educational focus. Through projects centered on literacy, social-emotional learning, cultural heritage, hands-on creative expression, and STEM integration, the fellowship aims to strengthen student engagement, enrich classroom instruction, and build deeper connections among schools, families, and their communities.

Graduation Spotlight is a storytelling series from Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) that highlights the students preparing to cross the stage and begin their next chapter in the coming days. In each feature, graduating seniors share—in their own words—the experiences, challenges, accomplishments, and people that helped shape their journey through IPS. Today, we’re featuring Dahlon Ratcliff, who recently graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, was a busy student as a member of Latin Honors and Key Club, and played four years of varsity soccer.
