Graduation Requirements – Class of 2029 and Beyond

In December 2024, the State Board of Education approved new graduation requirements beginning with the Class of 2029. The new Indiana Diploma and Readiness Seals are designed to better prepare Hoosier students for the future. These requirements provide students with the flexibility to experience work-based learning, earn credentials, and personalize their educational journey to achieve their unique goals.

What are the new graduation requirements?

We’re excited to share a new way for students to earn their high school diploma! All students will meet the basic requirements, and they’ll also have the chance to earn special “readiness seals” that match their own interests and dreams. This means students can make their high school journey more personal and meaningful. If a student’s goals change along the way, that’s okay—they can adjust their plan and keep moving forward. Our school counselors here to support every step of the way! Students who do not earn a seal must still complete components 2 and 3 of Graduation Pathways.

Note: The federally-required alternate diploma for students in special education with a significant cognitive disability is still available.

Hoosier high school students have the opportunity to earn approximately 60 credits.

What is a seal?

Readiness seals help students stay on track for graduation, even if their plans change. These seals are optional, but they’re a great way for students to choose classes that match their interests and future goals. Students can earn one seal or more than one—it’s up to them! Earning a seal also means they’ve met important graduation steps. Students can meet graduation requirements by earning at least one readiness seal. If a student wants to be considered to graduate early, they must earn one or more seals. Families can support their student by talking with school counselors and helping their child choose classes that match their interests and goals

Why earn a seal?

As Indiana begins using the new high school diploma, more partners will be added to help students have a clear and easy path to their future. Every student should have an education that fits their needs and helps them succeed in today’s world. The new diploma was carefully planned to help students follow their own path—whether that means going to college, starting a career, or joining the military after high school.

With more choices in the new diploma, the readiness seals give students and caregivers a helpful guide to reach their goals. Indiana leaders are working with many groups across the state to make sure each seal gives students real value and a strong start for what comes next.
