School Social Work Services
School Social Workers within Indianapolis Public Schools promote the social, emotional and academic success of all students through the prevention and/or alleviation of problems that interfere with learning. Social workers are specifically trained and qualified to analyze barriers to learning and achievement and are licensed by the Indiana Department of Public Education. School Social Workers provide a vital link between the home, school and community to provide support services that impact students’ academic achievement. School Social Workers promote the academic mission of schools by fostering educational environments that are safe and supportive, emphasizing early intervention and promoting positive behavioral interventions.
School Social Workers provide an array of services to address the needs of all students. These may include:
- Advocating for students’ educational needs.
- Assessments.
- Attendance intervention.
- Home visits.
- Case management.
- Classroom, parent and staff presentations.
- Consultation and program coordination.
- Crisis intervention.
- Identifying and resolving barriers to education.
- Implementing district programs and initiatives.
- Meeting with students individually and in groups.
- Networking with community agencies and identify resources.
- Participating on intervention teams.
- Problem-solving and conflict resolution.
- Prevention and intervention services (Tier 1, 2 and 3).
- Program planning and resource identification.
- Providing referrals to community agencies and resources.
- Substance abuse prevention and intervention.
- Supporting positive school climate and culture.
- Suspension follow up.
