Indianapolis Public Schools Board Outlines Process to Fill District 4 Vacancy Seat

Following the resignation of District 4 Commissioner Allissa Impink, the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) Board of School Commissioners has announced the process for filling the vacancy.

By law, the Board will appoint a representative to serve until the next regular election on November 3, 2026. State law requires specific eligibility criteria and fulfillment of the vacancy within 30 days.  

Candidate Eligibility

  • Residency: Candidates must currently live in District 4 and have resided within the IPS district for at least one year preceding the appointment.
  • Legal Status: Candidates must not have any felony convictions (unless pardoned, reversed, vacated, or set aside).

Selection Timeline & Requirements

  • June 16 – June 23: Applications and resumes accepted via the Board’s online application. The deadline is Tuesday, June 23, at 5 p.m.
  • June 23: The Board will hold an executive session to select three finalists.
  • June 24: Finalists will participate in public interviews in the IPS Boardroom at 6 p.m. Applicants must ensure they are available at this time before applying for this position.
  • June 25: The Board will vote to appoint the new commissioner during its regular Action Session at 6 p.m. in the IPS Boardroom. A minimum of four votes is required for appointment. Finalists must attend the Action Session, as the District 4 appointee will take the Oath of Office at the conclusion of the meeting.
  • The selected appointee must be available to participate in comprehensive Board member onboarding sessions starting the week of June 29th.
