If you are considering a different educational environment for your child that caters more specifically to his/her interests, you’re in the right place! IPS offers the most interesting, competitive and future-ready magnet and choice program options. Learn more below.
What are Magnet/Choice Programs? A magnet program offers families the opportunity to choose a specialized curriculum that enables students to engage with additional resources and innovative techniques that focus on their individual talents and interests. Each IPS magnet program emphasizes an instructional theme or approach. While similar courses may be offered in neighborhood schools, our magnet programs attract students from across the district by offering unique, focused, in-depth study experiences that support specific areas of interest. Families are encouraged to become actively involved in choosing the instructional program most appropriate for their children’s interests and abilities.
Magnet schools recruit students with a high interest in their programs, good academic and attendance records, and a willingness to work hard in the programs. Parent/guardian participation in the school is essential in order to help ensure students’ success. Applications from students with special needs may be evaluated to verify the program can support students’ specific needs.
Application We welcome any parent/guardian living in the IPS district to submit an application. Applications are also accepted if a family is intending to move into the IPS district. These students may participate in the lottery; however, families must prove they have moved into IPS boundaries by July 15, 2015 in order to accept their magnet placement. Non-resident (out-of-district) applications will be accepted with the understanding that students who do not reside within IPS boundaries will be assigned to available spaces after the placement of IPS students. Current magnet students do not have to reapply in order to remain in their current magnet school; however, they must apply to be considered for a different magnet program.
The 2015-2016 IPS Magnet/Choice Application will be available online here on November 22, 2014 and must be submitted by January 16, 2015. All information on the student application must be complete and accurate to in order to be processed. Students new to IPS must first enroll with our Office of Student Assignment, 120 E. Walnut Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Completion of an enrollment form, proof of address, original birth certificate and immunization records are required for enrollment.
Up to three program choices are allowed on the application. Students in grades 1-12 applying for magnet programs must demonstrate previous academic success. Middle school and high school programs may require one or more of the following: teacher recommendations, auditions, essays, portfolios or parent and student contracts. Program eligibility information is included with program descriptions.
Lottery Selection Process (for On-Time Applications Only) Assignments are made using a lottery selection process. Students will be assigned to programs using a random lottery with preferences given to siblings. If all available seats in a program are assigned, then a waitlist will be generated. A student may hold a place on no more than two wait lists. Once an applicant accepts a seat in a magnet program, his/her name will be removed from the remaining waitlist.
Admission Students will be notified by mail on or before February 13, 2015 regarding the status of their on-time application(s) for the 2015-2016 school year.
Late Application Process Late applications are processed in the order they are received. Families may make two selections and students can be placed on two waitlists. Once an applicant is assigned, he/she will be removed from the remaining waitlist. Sibling preference does not apply to late applicants.
Transportation Students who reside more than 1.25 miles from the magnet school will receive transportation in accordance with the IPS transportation policy. Non-resident students will not receive transportation.
