Mrs. Monica Winter-Widel

I was born and raised in Argentina. My parents sent me to one of the first technical schools open for girls in Buenos Aires where I got my degree as a Chemical Technician. While in high school, two things happened: one, my math teacher inspired me to persevere even though math did not come easy to me and two, I ended up taking over the required English class and teaching my peers, and I knew then and there that I wanted to become a Teacher.

I came to Chicago in 1983 where I got my Bachelors in Science and my Masters in Math Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I taught math and science to several age groups ranging from Kindergarten to university students in Chicago, Indianapolis, and the San Francisco Bay area.  It is my belief that all humans no matter what the age, scholastic aptitude, gender, or academic status are capable of experiencing the pleasure of solving a challenging mathematics problem.

My teaching style is varied: there is a time for theoretical knowledge, a time to explore, a time to demonstrate your knowledge and a time to practice your knowledge. Above all, I wish that you all enjoy the subject matter and that you learn as much as I am learning from you. I am very honored to be at Shortridge High School.
In my free time, I enjoy cooking, gardening (especially orchids) and reading Spanish novels.
