Mrs. Jessica Carlson
My name is Jessica Carlson, and I am a science teacher at Shortridge High School. I was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellowship at the University of Indianapolis Spring of 2014. For the 2014-2015 school year, I taught biology at Southport High School, as a year long clinical placement, and completed my Master of Arts in Teaching June of 2015. Previously, I did bench research studying the structure of the vitamin B12 receptor on E. coli at Purdue University where I received a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology in 2005. I have played an active role in the PTSA at IPS school #302 as a parent, including serving as president from 2012-2014.
I married my best friend and partner, Rob, in 2003. He is a computer engineer and helps with robotics here at SHS, so you may see him around! We are proud parents to Natalie and Jack. The four of us share our home with 1 dog, 3 cats, and 3 beehives! We love travelling, hiking, biking, and kayaking. Rob was born and raised in Canada, so our passion for travel includes getting our kids to as many states, provinces, and other countries as possible. Our summer trip this year was to Quebec City, Montreal, and Ottawa for Canada's 150th birthday. My personal, current stats now include: 49 states, 7 provinces, and 5 countries.
I am blessed to have discovered teaching. Exposing students to the amazing wonders of science is my platform for teaching students how to become responsible citizens and life-long learners.
