Ms. Deb Melton
Hello everyone! I am Deb Melton, (aka “Ms. M” by my students). This is my fourth year here at Shortridge. I have 17 years of experience teaching students with special needs. I have a MAE in special education, with certification in K-12 mild, moderate, severe, and profound disabilities. I love working with high school students! It is so rewarding to help the students make the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
I have a wonderfully supportive hubby named Kevin, and a very special fur child at home (a beagle) named Lily Baby. Lily B is truly my child! I am very close to my family, and usually visit with my parents, sister, and in-laws each weekend. I speak to my Mom on the phone every day. I love all things colorful (especially anything that is hot pink and/or glittery).
Our classroom theme is “Rainbow Shabby-Chic". We want our classroom to feel safe, inviting, relaxing, and engaging for our students. The students have helped with the classroom décor quite a bit! I think I have the best students in the entire high school. I love each and every one of my students! I have a co-teacher this year: Carlie Vannatta. She's an awesome addition to the classroom! We share students, so our classroom is always "hopping". We have several adult assistants in our classroom: Linda SerVaas, Sylvia Davis, Kelly Popovich, and Lisa Kyle. These ladies are such a wonderful addition to our classroom- we could not do everything we do "on the daily" without them!
This year, I hope to help our students refine their life skills sets as we explore health, math, language arts, science, history, fine arts, physical education, music appreciation, cooking, cleaning, vocational skills, community skills, and so much more! I can’t wait to see all of the students finish high school with a place to live, a job, and some social activities in which to participate!
When I am not spending time on school stuff, I like to work in the garden or go boating with my hubby. I also like to spend quality time with Lily B. You can also find me working on various arts and crafts, or even baking some goodies. I hope to fill our classroom with educational experiences, as well as with love. Come check out our Rainbow Shabby-Chic classroom when you have a few spare minutes! We are a friendly bunch of people on the first floor of the school!
